Pontifical States (also Papal States or Church States, were a group of territories, especially at central Italy, that were under the administration of the Catholic Church with the Pope as sovereign. They survived as independent bodies between 750 and 1870. They had Rome as capital and they were incorporated during the Unification of Italy.
